Today’s society teaches you to look out for yourself. In fact, it is expected to be a means of success. No one that is ‘nice’ ever truly succeeds. But this simply is not true.

Living a selfless life begins with oneself and it naturally overflows to demonstrate love and kindness to the rest of the world.

Practical ways to be selfless

Here are some easy and practical ways to be selfless in your everyday life. Start small – and reap huge rewards. Life is so much easier when your perspective is expanded, your heart is lightened and your mind is refreshed.

Number 1: Love yourself

As mentioned, being selfless starts with yourself. Do things on a daily basis that put you in a good headspace. Demonstrating self-love and compassion with yourself is a crucial foundation in living a selfless life.

Number 2: Donate your ish

Human nature tends to always want more. But, if you are reading this, you more than likely already have more than enough. Whether it is cleaning out your cupboard and gathering clothes that you no longer wear, or buying a few non-perishables, there are countless opportunities to help those in need.

Number 3: Forgive and forget

This is a lot harder to do than anticipated. It means letting go of your pride and stubbornness. By choosing to give another person’s perspective a voice, and acknowledging your own in comparison is the first step to forgiving someone and releasing the burden of bitterness. There are many ways to do this such as talking to the person or taking a more symbolic approach as Candi did. The freedom and reduction of stress are astounding.

Number 4: Volunteer your time and skills

Regardless of how petty or magnificent your individual skills are – to someone else they could be highly valuable. By sacrificing time, a very precious resource, to use your skills to help someone else is a great way to practice selflessness.

Number 5: Be there for friends and family

Family and friends share our life journey with us. The true description of a friend/family member is someone who loves you regardless of your flaws, and can constantly be relied on to support you. Chances are if you consider someone your friend or family member, then they consider you one too. By supporting your friends and family in times of need – whether they ask for it or not – is one way to practice selflessness daily.

Often, selfless acts can leave you with such an incredible feeling that it’s hard to believe the act is not actually selfish in nature. Embracing a selfless lifestyle is a brave decision that is exceptionally rewarding. Try it! And let us know how it goes.
